What to Wear for Your Newborn Photoshoot (with Styling Tips!) | Written by Hertfordshire Baby Photographer

Planning your baby’s first photoshoot is such an exciting part of those early days and one of the questions I’m asked most often as a newborn Photographer is, “What should we wear?” Whether you're just a few days postpartum or your coordinating siblings, choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in the final images.
At Captured by Carter, I specialise in white, minimalist, studio-based newborn photography, which means we keep the focus where it should be on your little shining star. The styling is gentle and neutral so you’ll never need to worry about clashing colours or harsh patterns. Here’s my guide to making outfit choices easy, stress-free, and beautiful.
🌿 For Baby
Your baby is the star of the show, and in most cases less is more.
Recommended options:
Soft, plain wraps or swaddles (I provide a beautiful selection in-studio)
Simple onesies or knotted gowns in muted tones
Bare skin (nappy-only) for those classic, curled-up newborn poses
Avoid:
Loud patterns, logos or cartoon characters
Bulky clothing that hides baby’s shape
👩👩👧 For Parents
Your newborn session is about connection so don’t worry about dressing up. Comfort, coordination, and simplicity are key.
Best choices:
Neutral tones (white, beige, cream, soft grey, muted blush or olive)
Soft, comfortable textures like cotton, linen or knits
Flowy dresses, simple t-shirts, or button-downs
Avoid:
Bold patterns, stripes or logos
Bright colours that can reflect onto baby’s skin
Overly formal or stiff clothing
Bonus tip: New mums - I keep the studio warm and cosy, and I’ll gently guide you into flattering positions. You don’t need to “bounce back” or hide anything. These are your real, raw, beautiful moments - just as they are.
🧒 For Siblings
If big brothers or sisters are joining, I always start with them first when energy is fresh!
Styling suggestions:
Keep them coordinated with the family (neutral colours work for everyone)
Avoid strong characters or prints (we want timeless, not trending)
For little girls, a soft dress or romper; for boys, chinos or comfy knits
Feel free to send me outfit options before your session - I’m always happy to advise!
🤍 The beauty of wearing White outfits for your Newborn Photoshoot
Wearing white for your newborn photoshoot is always a beautiful choice. White symbolises purity, simplicity, and calm - the perfect pairing for the tender, early days with your baby. In the studio, it reflects light softly onto your skin and enhances the minimalist style I’m known for. White outfits also help create timeless images where the focus stays on your connection, not your clothes. Whether it’s a flowy dress, a simple white shirt, or a soft baby wrap, white never goes out of style - it keeps your photos clean, classic, and emotionally rich, so you’ll love them just as much in 10 years as you do today.
🏡 Bonus: You Don’t Need to Buy a Thing
I offer a carefully curated Client Wardrobe in my Hertfordshire studio, with a few outfit choices for mums, babies, and siblings. If you're unsure or feeling overwhelmed, you can walk in with nothing but your baby - and leave with a gallery full of memories.
💬 Final Thought
Newborn sessions aren’t about perfection - they’re about connection. Wear what makes you feel good, keeps you comfortable. I’ll take care of the rest.
