Welcoming a newborn into your life is a monumental occasion, and capturing those precious first days with a professional newborn photoshoot is a wonderful way to create lasting memories. Preparing for your studio photoshoot is key to ensuring everything goes smoothly.
Here are some helpful tips on how to prepare for your Newborn photoshoot:
1. Choose the Right Newborn Photographer
Choosing the right photographer for your newborn's first photoshoot is one of the most important steps in ensuring you get the beautiful, timeless photos you’re hoping for. Your newborn’s first moments are so precious, and you want to work with someone who will capture those memories perfectly while also making sure your baby is safe and comfortable. When researching photographers check out their portfolio to get a feel for their style, does it align with yous? Their editing style - bright airy, dark grainy, etc. Their use of colours, props & poses - is this how you picture your little bundle of joy being photographed? For example, people who see my portfolio of work should straight away see my style is minimalist, white, relaxed and timeless - Do you like this style? Can you imagine your little one being photographed like this? If so you're in the right place & I would love to welcome you into my Hertfordshire Studio and capture your momentous moments for you to treasure forever! 2. Pick the Best Time for Your Photoshoot
Newborn photoshoots are best done in the first 2 weeks of life when babies are still sleepy and more easily posed. If possible, schedule your shoot during a time when your baby is likely to be content and fed, avoiding the evening hours when they might be more fussy. There is always plenty time for feeds during your Newborn shoot, however the morning-early afternoon time tends to be the prefered time for little ones.
3. Dress Comfortably
A white vest & white baby grow is the perfect outfit for your baby to arrive in for your Newborn Shoot. I have outfits here at the studio that they can also wear during the shoot. For you, it’s best to keep your outfit simple and comfortable, it can get quite warm in the studio so layers maybe advisable. Solid colours and neutral tones work well, as they don’t distract from your baby - in my studio I advise parents to wear White/ Off-White to keep the focus on your little shining star where it should be! If you’re planning to be in some of the shots, avoid bright, bold patterns or logos that might also take attention away from your newborn.
4. Keep Baby's Comfort in Mind
One of the most important aspects of a successful newborn photoshoot is ensuring that your baby is comfortable. Before the photoshoot, make sure your baby has been fed, changed, and is well-rested. You may want to pack extra clothes, wipes, and diapers in case of any accidents during the session.
It’s also a good idea to dress your baby in something loose and soft that won't leave marks or indentations on their skin. The studio may be warm, so be prepared for your baby to be posed in just a blanket or wrap, and bring a dummy or bottle for comfort if needed.
5. Plan for Plenty of Time
Newborn photoshoots often take longer than other types of photoshoots. Babies tend to need breaks for feeding, changing, or comforting, so be prepared for the session to last around 1-2 hours. Make sure you leave plenty of time in your day so you can enjoy the session without feeling rushed.
6. Bring Meaningful Props (If Desired)
If you have a prop or personal item you’d like to include in the shoot, such as a special toy, hat, or family heirloom, don’t hesitate to bring them along. While many newborn photographers like myself have a range of props and backdrops for you to choose from, personal items can add a meaningful touch to the photos.
You might also want to bring a soft toy or something comforting that your baby is attached to. These small additions can help make the photos feel more personal and unique.
7. Relax and Trust Your Photographer
It’s completely natural to feel a bit anxious, especially if it’s your first newborn photoshoot. However, remember that your photographer has worked with many families and knows how to guide you through the process. Trust their experience and take this time to relax and enjoy the experience with your little one.
Most newborn photographers are very patient and will take their time to ensure the baby is comfortable and safe throughout the shoot. The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will turn out!
8. Prepare for the Studio Environment
Newborn photography studios are usually set up with lighting, comfortable props, and calming music to create a peaceful atmosphere for both you and your baby. In my studio you will almost be lulled to sleep in the cosy setup from the white noise/ calming music and warmth - I always heat the room up before your arrival so baby is as comfortable as can be so be prepared and potentially wear layers yourself.
9. After the Shoot: Choosing Your Photos
Once your newborn photoshoot is over, it’s time to relax and wait for your gallery to be ready! Be prepared for the fact that it may take a couple of weeks for your photographer to finalize the images. I usually aim to have your gallery ready for you to view in 2-3 weeks from your shoot date. In the meantime, take a breath and enjoy making new memories with your new little love that's in your life! When you receive your photos, you’ll likely have the opportunity to select your favorites. I currently offer different package sizes to allow you to choose all the photos you would like for a very affordable price!
10. Consider Additional Sessions
Some families choose to do multiple photoshoots throughout their baby’s first year, such as milestone sessions for 3, 6, and 12 months. If you love your newborn photos and want to capture your baby’s growth, consider discussing this with your photographer in advance to book future sessions.
By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your newborn photoshoot will be a smooth and enjoyable experience for both you and your little one. With this careful preparation, you’ll be ready for your photoshoot & have beautiful memories captured to cherish for years to come!
