🍼 Sibling and Newborn Baby Photos: Reality vs. Expectations
As a professional Newborn baby photographer with a studio in Hertfordshire, I often hear the same question from second-time (or third-time...) parents:
“Will my toddler actually cooperate during the shoot?”
Let’s be real: newborns sleep, toddlers run! But don’t panic! With the right expectations (and a bit of gentle trickery), you’ll still walk away with gorgeous photographs you’ll treasure forever.
✨ Expectation: Picture-Perfect Hugging and Smiling
Reality: Your Toddler Has Other Plans
You’re imagining that Pinterest-perfect photo: big sibling lovingly cradling baby’s head, both looking angelic. In reality? Most toddlers:
Refuse to sit still
Suddenly hate the baby
Get overwhelmed or bored quickly
🧠 Photographer Tip: I always work with their energy, using games, praise, and speed to capture split-second magic.
📷 Expectation: Dozens of Frame-Worthy Poses
Reality: You Only Need ONE Great Shot
Toddlers are unpredictable. But one smile, one cuddle, even a sweet side-by-side moment can be pure gold. That’s the shot you’ll frame. That’s the moment that will melt your heart.
✅ What you might actually get:
A kiss on baby’s head
A high-five with baby in the background
A giggle while baby snoozes next to them
And it’ll be perfect.
🧸 Expectation: Your Toddler Will Follow Instructions
Reality: You’ll Be Chasing Them With Raisins
Most toddlers don’t take kindly to being told what to do, especially in a new environment.
That’s why my studio is toddler-proofed and play-based. I guide with patience, not pressure. We sing songs, play, and let toddlers lead the pace.
🎯 Goal: Create a safe space where your little one feels comfortable enough to relax (and maybe even cuddle the baby!)
🕊️ Expectation: You’ll Get Frustrated
Reality: You’ll Be Surprised What We Capture
You might feel like the session was chaos. But through my lens, I see the in-between moments - the giggles, glances, and genuine connection that unfold when we let go of the pressure for perfection.
📅 Planning Tips for Sibling + Newborn Sessions
Book when baby is 5–14 days old for best sleepy poses
Prepare sibling with stories and excitement about the shoot
Bring snacks, favourite toys, and don’t forget a bribe or two 🤫
Let go of pressure - kids feel it, and it shows in the photos
💬 Final Thought: It’s Not About Perfect - It’s About Connection
Your photos don’t need to look like an ad campaign. They just need to feel real because that’s what you'll want to remember.
Whether your toddler cuddles their new baby or just sits nearby with a cheeky grin, it’s a beautiful start to their sibling story.
